old merc. 115 hp inline 6 flooding problem

i have a merc motor 115 hp about a 78 79 model will start and idle but when throttled up at idle very sluggish but when put in gear will rev up fine is this a carb problem?? and if so what can be done to correct problem??

i think this problem is do to flooding out!!! and was woundering what i could do to correct??? thanks!!

Rebuild all the carbs using new gaskets and needle and seats. Check the floats carefully. If they are hollow you want to be sure they haven't developed any pinholes and taken on fuel.

is this an "easy" process something i could do as a beginner or a job for mechanic???

Close call....<br /><br /><br />Try running the carbs dry a couple times at idle and then pumping them up real fast, that can re-seat a sticky float needle. SOMETIMES.<br /><br /><br />Also you might wanna set the idle needles as per the manual.<br /><br />Then you may have to tear into the carbs. :) <br />-W
