I purchased an old fishing boat with a 1953 60 HP Mercury. (Direct Reversing) I bought a new battery and tried to crank it over. All I get is a clicking sound,(choke). Does the remote control have to be at a certain possition in order for it to turn over?

I had the same problem, I had to find neutral, then it started right up.

GB - It sounds like the solonoid is bad, not getting enough voltage or the starter connections or wires (or starter itself) are bad. Jump the started directly from the battery to see if it works, then trace backwards to the key switch.
