Ok this motor (70's 318) was given to me, it has been setting for, well, years. It is not locked up and I don't want to run it a long time. But it would be nice to be able to use my truck while I rebuild the motor that was in it. Anyway I think the rings are stuck, have not ran compression on it yet. I have been told that one can put brake fluid into the cylinders and let it soak for a couple of days and this will free the rings if they have stuck from setting. I was thinking (yes it hurts) that I would make a mix of Seafoam and brake fluid 50/50 and inject that into each cylinder. What do yawl think?

I'd Skip the brakefluid,+ Proceed...........

Actually,.......
Marvel's Mystery Oil would be My Choice.......

Or tranny fluid. Either will work great to loosen things up. I'd leave the brake fluid out of the scenerio though. Its only benefit is it will make seals swell which MIGHT fix a leak or two but its probably not worth trying.

Ditto on that Marvel Mystery Oil. BTDT and it works. Brake fluid is not compatable with motor oil.

I'd pull the plugs, put a couple of tablespoons in each cylinder and turn it over a couple of times. Let it sit for awhile and repeat. IT WILL SMOKE big time when you do fire it up. SO make sure you have the exhaust outside.

Ok, I was a bit uncomfertable with putting brake fluid in the motor, I'll give the marvel mystery oil a try. I get off in about 20 minutes and wally world is right down the street! It will be outside when fired up! May use a bit of ATF also,,

Re: Old motor

When you get it running or change oil (which ever comes first) you can put a quart of Marvel Mystry Oil in the crankcase, just add and top off with your favorite brand of oil. You can also add a quart to the fuel tank. This will all aid in helping lubricate the entire engine, ie lifters, rings, valve guides, and crankcase.

Hook your starter up and crank her with the plugs out and your favorite lube and sqwirt into the cylinders, giving time in between for starter to cool.Do a few revolutions then install it whatever vehicle it's going in.If she's going to give you problems better out than in

Re: Old motor

Well the stuff is in it, 50/50 marvel mystery oil and seafoam! injected some into each cylinder put the plugs back in and cranked it over, then pulled them back out and injected more, returned the plugs and let it set. The 32 oz was almost the same cost as the 16 oz size so I got the big one. The motor has fresh oil in it now and if/when it starts I'll be running some down it's throat, maybe several different things  I have a lot of used motor oil that was/is on it's way to the re-cycler,,,,,

Too late now, but I wouldn't have turned the engine until the oil or seafoam that you used had a chance to penetrate for a few days. Sometimes a stuck ring can break if there is any surface rust on the cylinder walls. After some time to loosen up, I would carefully rock the crankshaft back and forth with a swinghandle and socket ensuring that there isn't any undue resistance. Good luck!

Re: Old motor

If it doesn't wake up it will be ok cause it was going to get a full rebuild anyway be fore my son puts it into the 65 dart! If I can run it for a while, long enuf to rebuild the one I pulled out even better! At this point my son and I have 4 rebuilds to do, 1 - 273hp 2 - 318's and 1 - 360, when we get done we'll have nice oldies to drive!

Re: Old motor

It runs! And its stronger than the engine I just pulled out. finished putting it into the truck and went for a drive. It dont even smoke,,,,,,,, not bad for setting about 15 years. I made a mixture or seafoam, marvel mystery oil, USED rotella t oil, and a bit of gas. injected about 3 tablespoons of it into each cylander and it popped right off! Ran it until it fully warmed up and ran some of the marvel mystery down its throght, followed that with some of the used oil (smoked like hell here) and shut it down. It now starts right up! I may just have to fishing next weekend,,,,  ;) :p
