Re: old outboard

Welcome to iboats.

My book is kinda vague. Nearest I can come is 1923. Is there a model name on it? Back then they didn't have model numbers, they had model names. 7739 is basically a serial number. A 3Hp Model A Twin would have a motor number between 6520 and 12,000.

Re: old outboard

This engine is a twin cylinder, opposed pistons. It has a rectangular gas tank under the flywheel. The engine is started by grasping a knob on the flywheel and spinning the flywheel. There is an aluminum plate riveted to the front of the gas tank, it says: ELTO, light twin, designed by Ole Evinrude. Evinrude Outboard Motor company, and the motor No. is stamped into the aluminum. The back of the gas tank has the elto name written in large letters. I can't find any other numbers, or names. The motor is steered with a rudder that is made to be connected to cables. There were some decals on top of the gas tank on each side of the flywheel, but one is gone and the other one is about oil mixing. Shebe3

Opps- the aluminum plate is riveted to the front of the gas tank, not the flywheel.

Sounds like one of Ole's early rowboat motors, hence the knob on the flywheel and no rope sheave. Pick up a copy of Peter Hunn's Old Outboard Book, third edition, for more details. Fascinating read.
