hello everyone.

Although I spent many an hour whiling away the time on my old bomber tri-hull bass boat with the Merc 85 on it, I've never really had to do that much with my "newer" bass boat, a Ranger 373V with a Johnson 150 GT (w/VRO). That is, until now....

Apparenlty, the coating for one of the steering cables has worn through without my knowledge, and water has gotten into the cable itself, and it's seized so badly it won't turn, so I'm going to replace it.

As I was typing this, i just happened the remember that the boat turns fine to the left, but not the right. My friends have taken to asking me if I'm going to bring the L + R boat to the next fishing trip. Anyway, I have checked the usage of the remaining cable, and it feeds superbly. however, what I just realized is taht I never checked it when attached to the motor, so I guess the question I now have is this...Is it possible that something else is causing this failure to turn to the right?

Okay, so much for revelations, i'll have to check that tomorrow. In the meantime, the main reason I made this post was to find out if I should replace BOTH cables, even though one of them works flawlessly?

Re: Old Ranger, steering

Hey DJ, sorry I haven't responded sooner. I got your reply earlier in the week, but I was out of town on business, and it was late, blah, blah ,blah.

Anyway, I considered your advice for a couple of days, and I knew that's what I was gonna hear, cause that's what I would have told someone else.

But I couldn't get around the price tag, even discussed it with the wife trying to convince her, but after we looked at the finances, it just wasn't going to happen.

So I called Ranger and talked to a guy in their parts department. He suggested the same thing, until I told him that I had reassembled the remaining cable to the helm, and tested it out. I can turn the motor stop to stop with one finger, so I'm pretty sure the other cable isn't binding, and since it's been sitting for 2 years, I'm also pretty sure it's not rusted.

I also found out that I can order the exact part from Ranger for cheaper than I can get in on the internet. How weird is that?

So, I order the one cable to replace the one I pulled, going against your advice. Try not to be mad at me, I know it can be frustrating when someone asks for advice then ignores it. Just know that I did appreciate your reply, and I didn't ignore your advice, I still agree that the best solution to the problem would be to have gone the route you suggested.

Hopefully there won't be another post by me in the future about what happened when the OTHER cable failed.

Wish me luck and keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks again.
