Old 'Rude got me again

Two questions.

It is a 89 25 HP. I started a topic earlier, now this has changed.

Water pump impellor, the vanes were pointing in opposite directions and did not work. What did I do to cause that? I rotated the housing when I installed it, it never pumped.

The drive shat move up from the foot, it slide back. How bad is this? What do I need do now?

Short answer, pull the lower unit again....

Disassemble the pump.

Reassemble the pump.

Slide the impeller down the drive shaft, engage the impeller drive key with the drive shaft. This will 'lock' the impeller to the drive shaft. The impeller must NOT turn freely on the shaft. The impeller and drive shaft must turn together as a unit.

Coat the impeller vanes with ample amounts of dish washing soap. Coat the inside of the steel impeller cup too.
Slide the pump housing down the drive shaft until it contacts the vanes of the impeller.

Heres the important part:

Hold the drive shaft from turning.

While pressing down on the housing, rotate the housing ONLY COUNTER CLOCKWISE. The impeller vanes should start to bend and then enter the housing. Continue rotating the housing until the housing is fully seated. When the housing is fully seated, rotate until the mounting holes line up , and bolt it down.

Apply bearing grease to the drive shaft splines

Reassemble lower unit to motor being sure to properly align the water tube into the rubber water tube grommet.
Re-connect shift shaft linkage
Re-bolt lower unit to midsection.
Check for proper operation of shift lever Forward, Neutral and Reverse.

Tank test motor.

BTW, just re-insert the drive shaft into the lower unit, rotating as needed to engage the splines with the pinion gear.

Thanks so much, I only rotated about a quarter turn last. I am ordering a new water pump kit and will try again.
