I am trying to find a good fuel-oil mix to power a old sea bee, I was told by the person I got it from that it was 4:1, but this is a bit thick. I then read in a book that a good guess would be about 16:1 (I havent tried this yet.) so I'm a little confused.

Motor no.:6077152056
Type:L77L

Do you know also how old this motor would be out of interest?

Yours Gratefully: scubee_steve :)

:) Oh and Happy Christmas everyone :)

I dont find that number. Most begin with 2 or 3
digits 025 or 225 etc. a safe fuel mix should be 16:1
Sea bees were built by the Gale devision of
OMC and depending on the year and model may share
parts with similar E/J motors.See if you can find the model number.

Steelspike - I think steve has a Austin Burrell Sea Bee rather than a OMC/Gale one. They were made in Leicester, England.
The only useful information about the UK Sea Bees I've been able to find is here. Check about 3/4ths of the page down. Some Sea Bees were air cooled engines, so they might have fairly high oil mix ratios. 4:1 does sound excessive though.
Do you know what hp your engine is Steve?

Re: Old See Bea Fuel Mix!

Thanks for replying, my motor (might be a) is a 4hp. The motor number could just be 0771520565, as the six looks like it's slightly out of alignement. The serial plate is printed in german and has Hamburg stamped on it??? That's the only place that there is any infomation on it that I can find. It dosen't have reverse or neutral gears so when I read the info on Paul Moir's link I thoght that maybye it wasn't a 4hp. Also it has JLO embossed on the fuel tank and bodywork, mean anything to you? How would I know if my engine was air cooled or water?

Thanks scubee_steve

Re: Old See Bea Fuel Mix!

Huh.
What I've found is that JLO was a motercycle and engine manufacturer out of Hamburg, which later merged with Rockwell Automation, a north american giant. The model number L77L looks like other model numbers JLO used. It is possible that your engine is a resold Gale engine, but I doubt it since it's a 4hp. Gale never made one - only a 5hp and a 3hp. And I've never heard of a Gale engine with any names in casting. Both those engines were 2 cylinder engines by the way.
If it is a unique outboard that JLO whipped up themselves, that would make it a third type of Sea Bee. Given their motorcycle background, it would probably be air-cooled. To the best of my knowlege, air cooled engines always have finned cylinders for cooling. If it's got no fins, it's water cooled.
Some aircooled outboards do have a water pump to cool the exhaust where it runs down the leg, so it won't burn you. Others don't, but I can't think of one that has an underwater exhaust.
I'm afraid that's all I know...
