I have replaced the armature assy. for a 58 18hp Johnson, with one from a 54-55 10hp. i assume this is a 100% interchangeable part. Anyway, while starting with a pull rope, the armature assy moves with the flywheel, to the stop position. It doesn't stay in the start position unless i hold the throttle handle.

Is there an adjustment i can make to increase friction on the armature seat? (the part that swivels) or is there an adjustment on the throttle handle?

i should also note that the throttle gears (where the handle pivots up and down) are missing a few teeth

You have to adjust the coils'. The flywheel is striking the coils'. The coil heels' should be flush with the casting boss, or coil seat. You should replace the throttle gears'. How much play is in the stator plate when you try to rock it up, and down?

the coils are flush with the casting boss, i checked that before i mounted the armature assy, and i think if i remember correctly, this was a problem with the orgininal assy

i swapped them b/c one had cracked/corroded coils

How much play is there on the pivot bushing.
