Am about to install marine grade transom. Have been researching on best way to seal my transom. As a complete novice am a little concerned about going up against an epoxy seal? I am now reading about old timers recipe? Do you all feel this is a good option for a transom. Seems much easier to apply and a lot cheaper option. Thank you in advance.

What kind of boat? Aluminum, glass, wood? If it's a glass boat you'll want to glass it in. If aluminum, then OTF and no need for other sealing.

Yes I am working on an aluminum job boat. The new transom going in will be 2 1/2 inch plywood. Will I need to use the OTF on all sides of each board considering I will be gluing them together into 1 piece?

you have to glue it all together, then treat. if you try to treat first, it wont glue together.

I have also used rustoleum oil based enamel
