Older (86) Mariner - good bet??

Any opinions on how an 1986 150hp mariner would rate compared to other brands or to this brand of a different year?? Was Mariner making good motors in 86?

A Mariner is a Merc with grey paint. That motor is a proven design and was made for a large number of years. The better question is what condition is that motor in? Does it have good compression? Is the gearcase good?
