Older 9.8 Mercury - Pull cord will not engage to start

The title is slightly confusing, sorry. The pull cord will pull and retract as it should, but there will be no resistance and the motor will not turn over. I guess the dogs in the pull start assembly will not engage, hence the lack of resistance. Should I simply pull the pull-start assembly off and lube it all up or is there something else I should be doing? Thanks in advance, -=B=-

Yes, the grease Mercury used tended to dry out with time. A light oiling should loosen it up...
