Hi Motown
No, Merc parts will not interchange with OMC products. What about all this heat? you said the the thing gets hot. How about a mod# then we'll know what year it is, and can better assist you with advice.

Almost forgot- smokes real bad too. Took bottom end off- Turn the shaft either way and the prop moves. What could it be?

Alcan- serial #25936-03460 This is a 2 stroke right? Had a buddy try to tell me it's smoking because it needs no oil in the gas. But it's getting hotter than all get out. Smokes when it runs for whatever reason- Also smokes from heat.

Well let not worry about the smoke right now.
Sometimes it will smoke more when it not been run in a while. Sometimes it will look like it smoking alot but not to worry to much about. Just be sure you are have your gas and oil mix right.
You said it gets hot make sure that the cooling system is proper. If it takes water to cool then make sure you are not overheating the engine.
Make sure that you have them thing done right.
The gears you check for problems is the shaft that you move to put in gear really moving the linkage at the gear case. That would be my first step.

Don't run it until you have at least a clue about what you are doing or you will ruin it.

Are you getting water to it for cooling? How?

Are you mixing oil with the gas and what kind of oil are you using and what is oil to gas mixture?

Go to your local library to the reference section and spend an hour or two reading up on "care and feeding of outboards". They should have a number of service manuals for different motors. You need not find one specific for your motor at this point - just read the introductory stuff. Then get back to us and we can go from there.

Hi Motown
You are correct your motor is a 1958 35hp big twin evinrude. The proper fuel/oil ratio is 24:1 that is a quart of oil to six gals of gas. If your motor is overheating you need to service the cooling system before you do any more testing. I strongly sugest you take Solittle's advice and ether take a trip to the library or fork out the thirty some bucks for a manual. Outboard parts can get expencive. A small investment in time to read up on the basics can save you time, money, your motor and your bacon. I really don't care that much if a guy screws up his motor beyond repair, cause he can allways dig up another. But I do tend to worry about personal safety (your bacon).

Yes- I'm no outboard wizzard- but I do machine maint. for a living. Anyhow- I have one of those nifty little suction cup deals for water to cool the motor. The pump is working. Water goes in the inlet, and comes out of the (let's say exhaust like I said i'm no wizzard) Not trying to say I think I'm some kind of expert on everything because i do maint. Just trying to say I do have some mechanical ability. And you are right I should get a manual for the motor. But here at 6 or so at night there is no place open to get one and especially on sunday. Just tryin to get some ideas while I was still all greasy and called it quits till Monday. I want to fishin in my boat darn it!!!!

Motown
Those nifty little suction cups won't work on this model. The water intake is located on the front of the skeg behind the propeller. Try running this thing in a garbage can, etc. Sounds like you may have already damaged the pump empeller, if it was any good to start with.

As Alcan stated, that side vent you thought was an inlet is an outlet. Tempo still makes the correct Big Twin/Lark fitting for a water hose connection, but it costs about $30 on special order from WestMarine.

Pull the LU off again, as your impeller is toast. I made the same mistakes years ago.

OK OK gotta come clean- actually had motor in garbage can. Bought the suction cup doo dad but thought water wouldnt be able to get in that opening. Was told by many people that old omc motors dont get enough water in a can and that the water just spins around the inlet. Seems like a can would work fine but i bought the suction cup deal but never put it on. (saw the clearance issue and didnt want to risk the what if's and toast the only running motor I have) If anyone else has any other advice besides I should start bank fishing again it would be very helpful.

Motown

When you run it in barrel - be aware these old gals are not good at sucking water up if it isnt covering the pump housing, not only the antiventilation plate. Pump is located right above plate, a couple of inches up.

Alright- think I have the heat under control now. The guy that had this motor liked to cobble stuff up a lot and it looks like the water tube wasn't hooked up quite right. Still stumped on the gear thing though. Does anyone have an old Evinrude manual close to a 1958 that would have the procedure for removal/installation of lower unit? (I know... "GO BUY A MANUAL!!!!") I have one on order from West Marine. Oldest they have is a 72. When It comes I should be able to stop bugging everyone with all these stupid questions. Thanks for putting up with me.
