I have a Mariner Outboard motor (1989) on an Ozark Bass boat. I have replaced the aluminum prop many times. Those stumps get the best of them.. Anyway, I want to put a stainless steel prop on but my local dealer says he didn't recommend it. Apparantly, the heavier prop induces a harmonic frequency up the shaft which may harm the motor.
Please tell me what you think and recommend a stainless steel prop that will work.

Thanks
gunnerboe@yahoo.com

I do know that unlike thier predessessors, the three and four cylinder loopers are more prone to harmonic damage to the crankshafts. He might be right.

-W

My 2 cents....That's crap info..they both use the same rubber hub design, and if the prop is balanced correctly, the harmonics don't change with the same number of blades.
Stump fields??????? I highly recommend SS in this exact situation.

Re: OLDER MARINER NEEDS NEW PROP

Just from my personal experience, I have a 97 Mariner 125 and I had a ballistic 3 blade stainless on it that would cause the engine to vibrate and run a little rough at idle and lower RPM's. The instructions that came with this prop even said this is a possible side effect of a stainless on some of the smaller outboards. Putting the factory aluminum back on made the problem disappear. I've talked to other people with the same trouble. The problem is the stainless prop weighs a bit more and amplifies ANY balance irregularities in the prop. Only seems to be a problem with the 3 & 4 cyl. motors. Hope this helps. Good luck & happy fishing!
