Older merc 350

Need a little help here. Got this 69ish merc 350 that runs like tits!! BUT the prop was spun, got a new one for 218.00 OUCH. NOW it seems to pop out of gear. Before it would still push water now it just like free spins????????? I see there is a "clutch" in the lower unit behind the prop. So do you think that's it or the gear?

Are you sure you got the same prop and correct hardware for it, the early 35s use a smaller shaft than the newer ones.

If the clutch is slipping, jumping the pawls it should be accompanied by a bang and the engine jumping it would be also normal for it to work OK in rev. Banging or jumping gear is a clutch dog, slipping or skipping is a bad shaft or gear.
