I recently inherited a 63 welcraft boat with a 100hp merc 6 cyl motor. The boat sat for some time unused,I can get it to fire up with a shot of starting fluid, however it just fires for a couple of seconds then dies.I replaced the gas tank, primer bulb and tubing, but it still just fires and dies ,fires and dies.It acts like it is'nt getting gas.I'm your basic mechanicaly illeterate contractor, and boat mechanics who will take a look at something that old are almost non-existant.Does anyone have some advise or tips? Desperate in Utah Thanks Lonnie

Hi, Lonnie.

Welcome to iboats. :)

It may be that all of your carburetors are gummed up, Lonnie. They must be removed, dismantled and thoroughly cleaned, including the small passages and orifices. Overhaul the fuel pump at the same time. It is not a difficult job if you use a good Repair Manual. The Manual is your first step.

Do not use starting fluid on a 2 stroke engine. It contains no lubricant and can destroy the engine in short order. Use a squirt of premixed fuel.

Let us know when you are ready. There are lots of Mercsperts here with any advice you need.

Good luck. :)

Just in case you don't already know, be sure to run it with a flushing device or in a tank in case it decides to keep running. You will definately want to rebuild the water pump if it's been sitting awhile.
