Older model mercury basic specifications

I am new here (I did search though) so forgive me if this has been answered already. I am looking into buying a used 5-8 hp motor. Since I live in the desert a long way from any boating centers, most likely I am going to have to do this online. I have figured out how to go from a serial number to model/part number for mercury outboards, and this allows me to search for part availability, but I can't seem to find a way to get basic info about a given model. The piece of info I am looking for is overall dimensions (I need to be able to fit the motor in my trunk), but other basic model info would be welcome as well. I have found sites to buy user manuals, but paying $25 for a manual for a motor I may not end up buying seems too much. So I am wondering if there are any sites where you can go from serial number to basic model info? Thanks

Welcome to the forums,

Don't buy very old Mercury models, as you know Tohatsu makes them their newer models 5-8 HP included. Being so, check Mercuy or Tohatsu web page for tech information.

Re: Older model mercury basic specifications

Thanks. I actually didn't know that Tohatsu was making the newer 5-8hp mercury's. Right now portability and weight are big issues for this motor and it looks like the two strokes give me a lot more possibilities when considering weight, size, and power. The problem I am running into is that very few people give the overall dimensions of the motors they are selling and the mercury and Tohatsu sites only seem to give info about the 4 strokes. I have just been asking the sellers, but if there was an online source for this info, I could narrow my search much quicker.

Tohatsu also builds engines for Nissan Marine and Evinrude 2 strokes engines, check :

http://www.tohatsu.co.jp/en/boat/index.html

Check 2 or 4 strokes, clik model and under dimensions will find what you are looking for...
