Hello everyone. I have the opportunity to purchase a 1978 Chrysler 10hp outboard that has never been used and kept in a storage building. The price is only $150. I'm new to boats and boat motors so can someone tell me what they think, what to look for and if I should have any concerns about a a 37 year old never used outboard. Thanks in advance.

My second wife was a 60 year old virgin---NOT! LOL

Seriously every once in a while you will find an engine with very little hours on it. $150 is a good price for any running 10 HP engine. However, the 37 year old impeller may be hard and brittle or may have taken a set so it might be wise to change it. Keep 50-1 TWC-3 in the engine and it may very well run for your grandkids and their kids too.

axslngr, :welcome: to iboats. Great to have you aboard...

$150 dollars doesn't sound bad if it look nice. And absolutely don't try to start it before changing the water pump impellor because I'm sure it has taken a set in that amount of time. And if you tried to crank it, no telling if one or more of the impellor arms were to break off, it could lodge in the engine water passages and cause some really serious problems trying to clear such out again. So take the time to replace that first. Then go for trying to crank it. It still could need the carb cleaned and lower foot oil replace as well, and maybe even the points and condenser replaced... But I'd buy it... JMHO!

Go for it and I'm assuming it's pull start so when you do go to start it after changing all the fun things give it an easy slow pull cuz that motor hasn't turned over in a long time

Thank you all for the advice. It belongs to an elderly man and he says he never even put it on a boat just been in storage all these years. The problem is he never titled it and apparently getting a title for it in Texas is next to impossible.

I would call or better yet, visit your nearest TPWD office and ask them the questions. I'm not sure when TPWD started requiring titles for OBs, but sometimes there are ways to do it following TX guidelines.
