Over the Thanksgiving Holiday, I traveled up to Kentucky to visit my father. Dad lives on a big fresh water lake, and naturally, most of the boats have been put-up for the winter. I went down to the local marina and toured the docks to see all the fishing rigs.

One thing really struck me: There are alot of fresh water motors that look and run like new. Mercs, Johnson/Evinrudes, even old Chryslers are everywhere. I even saw an old Gale 60 hp motor that ran well. Here if Florida, the salt water will eat up a motor quickly if neglected, and even if one's maintenance is good, salt water will take its toll. You will rarely see an old motor worth anything.

TD
its that way in central TX as well, we used to get chyslers, white and red mercs, martins, Elgins and Mccullochs all the time. toss in the occasional Gale and scott-attwater at life got interesting, the problem was getting service parts.
here in the salt pond I would not touch one.
I wont work on much older than 95 or so anymore other than routine maint. its not worth the time to dissaemble most of them and once you do there is a 50/50 chance that the interior cooling passages are gone.

Re: Older Outboards

Same is true with sterndrives. I probably wouldn't even consider buying a 5 year old raw water cooled I/O that was run in saltwater. In freshwater, that's just about when they're broke in. :)

Around here, a 20 year old boat is not only common, it's not even considered old.

willy
6 years here and its on borrowed time. the repairs can get unreal.
however if I could find decent older freshwater motors I have no issues working with most of them. the sixties and seventies motors suffered some wire harness issues, but if its fresh water its worth a harness.
