I have a 1977 ebbtide. The outboard is a 1978 Mariner 80 HP. It has the original tilt/trim motor. I need to know where the wires go on it. It has a black wire coming from the motor case, one green, and one blue wire coming out of the motor. It has a 4 post solenoid with 2 large ones and 2 small ones. I know one of the large post is where the positive wire to hook up to the battery goes. Can someone tell me where the others go? Also,it should have a wire coming from the negative battery terminal. Which post should that hook up to? Any help would be greatly appreciated. If it helps the part # is 76395A1

Billy

Re: Older tilt/trim motor help

Maybe someone can tell me if I'm on the right track. The black wire coming off the case of the motor goes to the small post on the solenoid. The blue wire coming from the motor goes to the large post on the solenoid. The green one coming from the motor and the green/white one get screwed down to the base of the motor. Where does the wire for the negative battery terminal go? Am I on the right track. Thanks.

Billy

Buy a manual-and buy the one specific for your motor rather than the generic seloc or clymer ones. It'll be the best investment you'll make if you're going to do your own work.

Re: Older tilt/trim motor help

My manual is for 1977-89 Mariner outboards. Where can I get one specifically for a 1978 Mariner 80 HP? Thanks.

Re: Older tilt/trim motor help

Billy, As in the diagram, That T/T unit uses the solenoid for up and no solenoid for down. The Blue wire goes on the solenoid large connection and runs the motor in the up direction. Black is ground, and common to both motor directions of operation. The Green wire runs the motor in the down direction.

Re: Older tilt/trim motor help

Thanks Trent and Chris. That helped immensely. I have one more question I hope you can help with. They replaced the tilt/trim switch on my control handle with a 2-button switch. The wires coming off of them are white, black, and green. The white is connected to the up button, so I assume that connects to the blue wire. The green wire is connected to the down button I assume for the green wire. The black wire connects to both the up and down switch. Would I connect that one to the red wire coming off the harness? I was told with the 2-button switch I can't use the trim limit switch, which I was told I don't have to have so that's no big deal. Thanks again.

Billy

Sounds like you have a handle on it.
