Hi there,
i've just finished a re-seal job on a 400 hydromechanical stringer drive. I do not know if this is normal, but the lower gearcase makes a strange (whining? sounds indeed like a fishing rod mechanisme that is pulled out fast) noise when running. It think it is like the pinion gear running heavy on the forward and reverse gears. I measured the play on the driveshaft and it is about 0.6mm (yes, i'm European) (calculates around 0.025") So it shimm's ok. I read about this could be normal, but as it is the first Stringer drive i'm getting my hands on, i do not know if this noise is normal. The mechanisme shifts nice .
Thanks in advance:confused:

I have some of that noise too. Some of it could be from the ball gears. I think it's normal to an extent.

Keep an eye on the lube in the lower and if it stays filing & water free, I wouldn't worry about it.

i can see no filing or water in the lower oil,but because of the noise , i did a new job on the drive. Opening everything , checking for play on gears and so. There was no sign of wear on the gears . The play on the drive shaft is as in the book. So i closed it up and put it on the boat. Shifting is smooth and without "cluncks" or "rattle" . To let you guys be part of this , i ran the drive from 650rpm up to 3500 and back. It still sounds like a jet engine . But the gearcase does not heat up abnormal or jams. The oil stays relatively clear, (but some foam)
Enjoy the sound on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TuqeE6q_bM. Let me know something about this .
thnx

Yes, that sounds just like my 140 OMC that used to live in my `79.
