Hello,

I have been perusing these forums and finding alot of great advice here but I have a problem I would like a bit of help with.

I have a 1976 OMC 140 Model# 990237M Serial #519200
I am thinking of replacing the points system with an electronic ignition and putting in a new coil. A mechanic I called said this would be useless as those old OMC points systems only needed a bit of TLC and they would be good to go. He said I would have trouble with the electric shift going into neutral, but the way I understand it it can be fixed with CDI's ESA system. Is this system only for newer boats then mine? Is this going to be worth it for me to replace this all or is he right that its more work than it's worth? Boat runs great out of the water but really bogs down when its launched. It seems to be intermittent, sometimes runs great sometimes terrible.
Trying to figure out how much of an investment it's worth putting into the ole girl.

Thanks!

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,.... I think it's a waste of money,... it's a 40 year old unit,...
Replace the points once a year, 'n go boatin',...

Yer symptoms sounds more like a fuel delivery issue, than ignition,....
