I'm looking at buying a 22' mason power boat with a omc 190. The owner says that it needs a new top end but I have no idea what that means. Also says the motor runs and the rest of the boat is pristine. It's a great deal so if any one can help shed some ligth on this. Also it might be obvious but I'm no mechanic but am inclined and learn quickly. What would it take for me to do this kind of repair myself.?

By top end, does he mean the upper gearcase on the outdrive, or new heads/rings/pistons on the engine? A lot of folks will tell to to steer clear of OMC. The parts are getting harder to find.... I own a 190 OMC in my 18' Cobalt. I have had a few issues, but for the most part I've had pretty good luck, A rebuilt upper gearcase would probably run you around $1,000.00, give or take a few hundred. FYI

Lets start by moving this over to the I/O forum, since it's a motor problem currently. If you buy the boat, and it needs work, swing back over here and start a topic about the boat work you need help w/.
