Hi friends,
Firstly, Im sorry for my English. Im from Czech Rep. so Im not native speaker....
Could you, please, help me how to set distributor advance.
I have bought new Delco Voyager EST marine distributor without points ( with coil, cables and etc)
Im not sure how to set up total advance....
I can find TDC mark on pulley with -2,-4,-6,-8,-10,-12 marks before TDC.
But.... I need to set up appx 24 total ( -6 iddle, + -18 at 4000rpm = 24 total )
Not sure about the numbers, but its not important right now ( will be checkit before timing )
How I will found that 24? without scale marks on pulley ?
I will use stroboscop pistol, but without marks Im lost.
Point type distributor use springs for timing advance so u need only know where -6? is.
And, please, one more thing...
How can I set up timing by rotating distributor for idlle and hi rpm by "one" distributor turn ?
I can set up only one timing....
I guess it will be "total"....
One more time sorry for my English.
OMC isnt very frequent boat here....
Thank you very much !!!
With greetings from other side of our planet :))

With the Delco EST you need to set up the base timing first in bypass mode. There is a special plug that you need to plug in and another lead that gets connected to 12V. You plug this in while the engine is running and then set timing.

When you are done, you can disconnect the plug and rev the engine to see what the total advance looks like. In order to see this, you will need an advance style timing light or put timing tape on the harmonic balancer.

Out of curiosity how have you hooked up the ESA to work with your new distributor?

I have recieved that plug in the kit...
Thats the part I understand....
Make the engine warm up, connect plug and 12+ on black wire....
But I do not understand what advance to set up.
Base (-6?) or total (-24?) ?
If I set up base ( which is good ) , total cant be right at 24?...
Or it works automatically ?
Im quite confused....
Timing tape is good idea !!
I will measure distance between -2,-4,-6 and make that tape....
Thank you very much !!

And about ESA, I have found some discusion about it.
If I understand right to this, I can disconnect ESA module completely.
I need to connect one interrupter swith wire to 12+ and the other wire from swith to black
cable from initial connector plug.
When swithed it will move distributor to 0? advance and engine to sputter....
Like u would like to "program" it....
I have found few discusion where people talks about it and it should works fine...
Hope it will works...

Thank you very much for your help !!!
Hope I will be succesfull with that tape :)
Thank you.

It works automatically. Built into the electronics of the distributor. You just want to check it to make sure the distributor is working properly.

CDI makes an replacement ESA that will work with the EST distributor. I would contact them to see which one you would need. I understand you are half way across the world and that makes things more difficult to get but that is the way I would try to do it here.

Do a search for timing tape online. You measure the diameter of your balancer and buy it based on that.

Hi Bruceb58,
yesterday I was tired and went sleep..... so sorry for my late answer.
Thank you very much for explain me how the el.distributor works.
Now it sounds much more logically....
Thank you ! I will try and let you know....
And thank you for help with that timing tape.
I will measure diameter of my balancer and order right tape.
ESA module is a question.
I will try how it works with module elimination ( as installation instruction camed with kit suggest and others from different forums ) and will see what next....

I appreciate very much your patience with my English and my questions ....
On more time THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!
With greetings
Tomas
