buckbuc,

I am assuming that this is a Ford based 2.3L (overhead camshaft, belt driven).

If so, do you have an electronic ignition or points? If points, you don't need 12V to the distributor. Only about 9.5V.

Also, hook up a vacuum guage to a manifold vacuum port. It should be steady at about 16-18 inches. If it is erratic, you have probably jumped a tooth on the timing belt.

The same applies for GM based engine.

Buckbuc, did you look at the plugs? They can really tell you what the engine is doing. Let us know what color they are.

YES I DID CHANGE PLUGS,PLUGS LOOK NORMAL SLIGHT TAN.SHOULD COIL VOLTAGE BE READ TO GROUND OR TO NEGITIVE SIDE OF COIL?12VDC I READ IS TO GROUND I AM USEING A
COIL WITH BUILT IN RESISTOR INSTEAD OF RESISTER WIRE.

Re: OMC 2.3 ENGINE MISS

With a built in resister in the coil 12 volts to ground seems right. What condition are your plug and coil wires in? It seems that the problem could be either your coil which you replaced, or the wire between the coil and distributor. I remember one boater had a problem he was chasing for a while until he found a problem with the coil to distributor wire. The boot had a bad connection and wasn't touching the terminal. Also the wires between the distributor and the plugs could be suspect.

If the miss is there at idle can you do the old trick of pulling one plug wire off at a time to see which cylinders aren't firing? Note....don't do this with bare hands, use insulated wire puller.

Buckbuc,
This maybe a strech, but I have the same engine. My boat had a miss on an off most of the summer. It died on the lake while doing about 20 mph. It would not restart. I thought it was an electrical problem, but found the gear on the auxilary shaft was all chewed up. It might be worth pulling your distributor to take a look.
