Can I use a head off a ford ranger for an OMC 2.3L (ford) engine. It looks the same. I was told by a local mechanic that it doesn't have the same flow for coolant. I have read on other posts that maybe the Cam is diffrent. What would need to be changed to use this inexpensive option? Since I happen to have one in the garage.

Re: OMC 2.3 head substitute

Welcome to iboats.

Generally speaking, MerCruiser motors use a custom marine cam, heavier valve springs, and stronger valves. Frankly I think a 2.3 is a 2.3 is a 2.3. Car, truck, or boat. Don't hold me to this, though.

Check and make sure that your 2.3 has dual plugs. Later ranger 2.3's had 2 plugs per cylinder. if they match it should work!
