I have a OMC 2.3L 4 cylinder that seems to be getting weak under a load and has a lot of smoke and oil coming out of the valve cover vent tube. After reading a lot of posts it looks like the OMC 2.3L engine has its problems and is hard to find parts for. Should I spend the time and money to rebuild this engine or is there a engine or engine and outdrive to that could fit without a lot of trouble into a 1989 17ft bayliner capri?

Well, how much dough are u willing to sink into that 17 ft. '89 Bayliner? What's the resale value on it? Probably not much, especially with the Cobra. Repowering ain't cheap. I would find out what's wrong with the engine, before I did anything.

The good news is the parts to rebuild the longblock are cheap and plentiful, its the marine specific parts (ex manifold, ect) that are rare and expensive!

Do you still have this boat. Can you give me the model number of your engine?
