OMC 2.3 litre - Prop will not Turn

I have a 1991 Four Winns with a 2.3 litre OMC Cobra. The engine starts fine and sounds great but does not shift into gear (forward or reverse). When shifting the shift mechanism is very tight. It never sounds like it is engaged or even trying to engage, always sounds like it is in neutral. Can this be the electronic shift assist module? or something else??

Nope, not the module. It doesn't even come into play until coming out of gear when in the water with a load on the props.<br />You have other problems. Could be cables or even the drive. <br />Pull the cables loose at the engine and see if you can shift by hand.<br />Next step would be to pull the drive and check the lower cable.<br />What maintenance has been done to the drive lately?

Just standard maintenence on the drive. I am not very good with mechanics but do not want to bring this in due to the age of the boat. I just want to sell it. For clarification, when you say pull the cable loose, what do you mean.<br /><br />Thanks for your help
