Help I ran out of ideas!! I have a 1988 2.3 Ford Cobra. I had it out 4 times this year and the last 2 I was towed to the dock. The engin was running good and it started to cut out and then shut down. I changed the points, condenser, coil checked and installed new fuses still no spark.
The breaker plate has a good ground, but with the key on I only get 6 volts at coil. It has a Motrola Distributer and altranator. Can It be the Shift assist module?? Help please I,m going on vacation mid July

Re: OMC 2.3 NO SPARK

I have an 89 that had similar problems. First, if you think its related to the shift assist, just unplug the connector going to it. If it runs, then thats the problem. If that doesn't work, make sure that the points are opening up correctly. I replaced mine and after tightening them down hard, they still moved. Since your getting voltage to the coil, it most likely not the resistor, which on these engines happens to be a length of wire. Pretty tough to track down. It took me about an hour to find it. Let me know what you find.

What's your voltage at the coil in crank mode? You should have at least 9.5 -10.0 volts at the + term. while cranking. If not check the starter solenoid "I" terminal for voltage. The resistor wire can also cause this problem when it gets hot.If you go with an internally resisted coil you can eliminate the resistor wire.hope this helps you out

I unhooked the shift assist allready, I will check the resister wire when I find it, I asume it is coming off the coil?

New problem I changed the seloind and tryed starting it started right up BUT the starter won't disingage I had to pull the battery cable.
I was getting poliarty across the large lugs on the seloind with all the wires off. I took it off the boat and checked it and it tested fine,
I reinstalled it and tryed starting and it started but would not disingage again. Again I had polairty across the lugs. It has a new battery new points new condenser new coil new cap
new rotor new fuses. Can the seloind be grounding out?

Re: OMC 2.3 NO SPARK

the solenoid needs current to engage. i would check the volts to the solenoid. disconnect the starter wire, but not the key wires and try it. use a volt meter and check terminals. could be key switch not disconnecting start circuit. and the resistor wire on my boat is on the + side of the coil. current comes from the key switch thru the inst. panel thru the resistor wire. some boats also have a wire (not resistor)fed from the start solenoid or slave solenoid to give the coil 12v at start up. this drops out and current is fed at a reduced level to the + terminal thru the resistor wire.

Double check your wiring. If it was dis-engaging before you replaced the solinoid, logic would dictate it's not the switch. Also check to make sure that the solinoid is the EXACT replacement. Where did you purchase? Anywhere but NAPA is not recommended as most of the other auto parts houses do not have direct cross's for marine parts.
