I am going to replace the camshaft belt on my 89 omc 2.3. The timing is supposed to be 10º BTDC according to manual. My questions are, should the timing marks on the timing cover on compression stroke be at TDC or 10º BTDC when I begin removing parts ,and should the timing marks on the timing pointer and timing cover be lined up at TDC or 10º BTDC.

If you are changing the timing belt the engine should be set on TDC.

The 10deg before TDC are the specs for ingition timing, not cam belt timing.
