Hi, I'm looking at buying a 1991 Sunbird with an OMC 2.3 TKO motor and Cobra drive. I have a lot of people telling me that it's fine if it's running but if something breaks you can't get parts. They also tell me that it doesn't have a great deal of power. Are parts impossible to get? I have a friend that says he'll sell me a 4.3 engine to replace it but doesn't know what it would take to do so. Could that be done? Thanks

Re: Omc 2.3

omc 2.3L engine is a ford block, and parts may not be super hard to find but they are gonna be more expensive - omc is no longer in business so aftermarket companies can and do tend to charge a premuim for parts

also, there aren't nearly as many 2.3L omc packages out there as mercruiser so used OEM parts are gonna be harder to find

as far as putting a 4.3L in the boat you will probably have issues mounting the rear flywheel cover to the transom assy, and the drive will not work - you need a V-6/V-8 compatible cobra drive to work

your best option right now is to pass on this boat, keep your eyes peeled for a 4.3L powered mercruiser package - plenty of em out there and lots of OEM parts still produced today for the engine/drive

Re: Omc 2.3

Thanks, I appreciate the quick response. I just did a test drive with it and all seems fine. It shifted into gears smooth doesn't seem to have any issues with speed or power. GPS said we were going 40 mph. I did some looking after reading your response and and it seems like the out-drive has a lot of parts still available but not many for the engine. The mercruiser will be my choice... Thanks again
