All,

I bought a 1989 Bayliner Capri With an omc 2.3l engine Model number 232BMRMED for $1000.00. I began to tear the engine down and noticed the following.

Water in oil, a popper freeze plug, rusted timing gears, starter and distrib.

I do know the person who owened the boat before me, and I have work on this engine before. It did run before winter. It was not drained for the winter.

So now I am trying to figure out if the block is cracked. Ther are no visible cracks, Everyone I speak too about this says I probally can not see them.

So the real question is do I buy a reman motor or attemt to rebuild this one.

I have been searching for a replacement motor with some success, all around $2100.00

I have very little experiance in this area.

Other suggestion to me have been to :

1. place a bigger engine in it like a V8 or even go to an outboard setup. I am told they some V8's will math up to the stren drive unit.

Any suggestions / reccomendation would be greatly appreciated.

Also where I may be able to find a reputable replacement engine.

Thanks

Doug

I wouldn't touch a reman with a 10ft. pole. Too many waranty issues. I may be wrong but i don't see how an 8 cyl. can match up with that drive without mods.

That's an itty bitty outdrive. It'll shred if you put a V-8 on it. Junk the 2.3. You might try finding a running car 2.3, but most of those have worn out long ago. If you do, just make sure to bolt on all of the stuff from your boat's motor or risk explosion.
