I recently obtained a 1990 Four Winns 170 Freedom with a 2.3L OMC I/O and It has missed a winterization in a Michigan Winter and Im concerned about it. Does anyone know where I can find a service manual for this OMC so I know exactly what to check to make sure everything is in working/safe condition?

What do you mean that it "missed a winterization" Someone did not drain the block and allowed it to sit outside in below zero temps?

If that's true, the engine is probably "toast"

You should probably look the outside of the block over pretty close. small 4 cyl engines usually crack up under the manifold an inch or so below the head. The manifold should be inspected closely too.

You can find a service manual on ebay. You should get an OEM OMC manual.

If you haven't paid for this boat yet, I suggest you don't.

Good luck.

Re: OMC 2.3L manual

Ill have to order that, thx for the link.

I did have about an hour to inspect the block from the outside. Its pretty hard to see everything but I did notice 2 of the 3 core plugs were slightly popped. Hopefully, oh hopefully this relieved the pressure and protected the block.

Is there anything specific I should look for damage on?

Should I just get two new plugs, install them, run some muffs and check for water in the oil?

another way that makes a lot less mess is just remove the fitting from the bottom of the oil pan, or loosen the line nut that holds the oil change tube into the fitting.
I'll bet you get about 3 litres of clean clear water before any oil comes out.

And if that is the case, don't bother running it -block is history- just pull the engine.

There is some block swap/compatibility with 2.3 from some Ford cars.
