Omc 2.3l not cranking at all

Hello,
I got my bay liner out for 1st time this year and turned ignition key. Nothing happened, no engine cranking... tested battery and it is fully charged. Trim up/down no problem. Horn sounds fine too. Just the engine is not turning. Please let me know what is wrong and where to start trouble shooting? Thanks.

Solenoids clickin'? If not, I'd go ahead and swap 'em. Then on to check the starter I guess. Check all the wires and make sure there's none that are broke I suppose too.

Dangvudan,

Hate to ask but it's always best to ensure some basics are covered.

No lanyard/kill switch problem right? (this one got me before)

and you have made sure the drive is in neutral?

I'm current mid work on some odd electricla issues which have traced back to a failed 50 AMP circuit breaker.

The previous owner of my boat removed the ignition from the fuse block, but you should check and see if your ignition fuse has blown.?

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,..... Best place to start is by cleanin' to shiny metal Clean the wirin' connections at the battery, then do the other ends of both cables,....
While yer doin' the Positive, at the starter's solenoid, do the rest of the connections there,....

More than likely, corroded connections are yer problem,....
Findin' exactly where is sometimes another matter,...
A Test Light or multimeter helps oh so much,....

Kill switch cable is connected and engine in neutral. I checked the battery cables connection ends (red and black) with a voltmeter and it registered 27.4 v. Also checked the key ignition voltage is 7.5v. There are 3 electrical wires on the ignition switch: red, yellow and purple. Which one kicks the engine when the key is turned? in other word, can I jump start the engine by touching the red wire to either the yellow or the purpose wire? If it is still not cranking, not even solenoid noise, anything thing else should I be looking at? Thanks

I think the problem may be in the ignition switch because when I turn the key, the dashboard light does not come on.

Had the exact same problem on my 2.3l bayliner. Ended up being the main power supply wire in the engine harness plug on the motor. Over the years that wire in that plug starts to make poor contact due to heat. Check there.

Dangvudan,

You've checked voltage on the battery, and at the ignition switch, good things! have you verified voltage to the starter components: the solenoid, and the starter itself?

I've been doing a lot of cleaning and in some cases re-terminating electrical in my boat.

by looking at this 2.3L schematic from another iboat forum: (linked below)

it appears you have a 50AMP fuse going to the tilt/trim which as you say is fine.. so that's good
you mentioned the horn works fine: so wiring from the helm to the engine is probably doing ok.. you also have voltage at the ignition switch which would support that the main harness seems to be ok.

I noticed in the picture there should be a single red wire from the solenoid to your starter.. have you visually inspected that.:?

Good luck to you sir

Thanks for the replies. I am wondering why my battery voltage measures 27.4 v instead of 12v? would it damage the starter if I do the solenoid bypass (jump cable from battery + cable to the starter)?

that is particularly odd... assuming you have only 1 battery.. being that would be impossible(for a normal 12volter).. bad meter? two batteries?
