Have come across a omc 230 in a 20 or so foot imp walk through bow rider. Think to be 70's or possibly early 80's. say it has been under cover or dry storage up until last year. interior good no rips, hull could use some work, new rub rails and such They say the first time out took on water (freeze plugs leaking) second time out ran fine. Third time found water in oil. want to get rid of cheap, talking about cutting up and throwing away. Would have to talk them into selling trailor. Know little about I/O. do have experience w automotive. Will a gm 305 or 350 have the same block and heads for a straight up swap? If so, do believe i will upgrade to this old bow rider. Thx in advance

Re: omc 230

don't waste your time or money on this one

the old stringer setups are antiquated and hard to find knowledgeable people to work on them

you would be better suited to find something newer with a mercruiser package - parts still readily available and plenty of folks who know how to fix em

Look closer and you may find a 351 down there.
Then comes the question about the drive condition.
At least a waterpump job before taking into use.

Re: omc 230

Not necessarily the case. I'm finishing up my second season on a rig those guys would have told me to cut up or burn, You need to investigate it just a bit more before you write it off.

is your rig the one mentioned in your signature??

if so, the setup the OP is referring to is a completely different engine/drive package - more commonly referred to as a "stringer" drive system

Yes. My rig is the one in my sig line.

I never saw anything in the OP that said anything other than he didn't know what he had. Didn't know the year or what powerplant. I only said it needed more investigation.

omc 230 - this engine model is pre-cobra days

70's or early 80's - omc came out with the cobra package in '86
