I got a 1988 bayliner capri, in great shape, engine runs good, i got a 17'' prop, however, i only get about 30mph out of it...32 at best. the engine rpm is 4300 at full throttle, boat trimmed and on plane, but it just won't go faster, even if i'm all by myself. what could be causing this? is this the normal max speed? am i supposed to go faster? is it misgeared? i get a good hole shot, but my top speed sucks. i put a 19'' prop on it and my hole shot goes away, and speed stays the same. any ideas? the engine is an OMC 3.0 130 hp, Cobra Sterndrive. help please.

You need to find out what the gear ratio is. Going to a 19 prop is going the wrong way, to bring your WOT rpm up, you would want to go to a 15" prop. If you need a 15, then something else is wrong.

Re: OMC 3.0 130hp SLOW?

i had a 15 when i first got the boat, great hole shot, but once again, 32mph was all i could get with 4500rpm at wide open throttle. the 17 prop gives me 32mph max with 4300rpm @ WOT with good hole shot and a smooth ride, and the 19 prop gives me about 3800-4000 rpm with crap hole shot. is my gearing wrong? the engine is fine. it's strong and smooth, no hiccups at all. i bought this boat last year. is 32mph typical of a 1988 bayliner capri 1950 with an OMC 3.0 130hp and a OMC Cobra sterndrive? seems like everyone else gets 45+ mph even with a 125 force o/b. lol:confused::facepalm:

hmm...i didn't think about it but an out of trim boat would definitely cause it to be slow. however when i'm up on plane and i'm scorching along at a whopping 32 mph, i don't sense any nose left or nose right trim side slip. hmm...i don't have a power trim i can't adjust it on the fly. however, when i release the steering wheel sometimes, it does want to rotate and the boat will turn. but only about 60%-70% of the time. not every single time.

Try trimming it up, if the bow is to low in the water it will plow through the water, which will cause the boat to slow down and the engine rpm drop.

Seems like everyone-else has wishometer speeds 45+ in a 19ft bowrider with a Force?.. Not saying that it's not true.. Your speed is a GPS reading correct? My boat will say it's doing 30ish when in fact GPS says it's doing 48..

How come you dont have power trim? Is it broken?

Sell that 19p on E bay the 15p seems to give you good RPM range if your TACH is correct

i don't have power left/right (yaw) trim. I have the up and down "tilt" (nose-pitch) trimmed up really nice. the 15p prop got chewed up in an unfortunate incident. the 17p prop gives me the best ride on the boat, i love it, but i have to get it re-pitched as the blades are a little bent...log in the water. i'll trim the yaw out and see if i can eliminate any drag that might exsist.

You have to get this fixed before you mess with anything else. Bent/chewed up props cause cavitation, will not give proper performance and ruin the bearings in your outdrive. Most boat shops will let you borrow one if you want to test, but seriously, replace or repair the prop first.

the 17 prop is not on the boat. the 19 prop is on the boat at this time. the 17 will be getting repaired soon.

Ayuh,... It sounds like ya gotta ditch the 19" altogether, 'n get another 15" prop...

well i adjusted the left/right (yaw) trim on the out drive and took it for a test run. squeezed out 34 mph gps verified with the 19-prop on it. i guess i'll try getting some bennett trim tabs. any suggestions or concerns?

I have 1987 3.0 I running 13 3/4 X 15 and get 35mph at WOT. I am looking to get a 13 1/2 X 22, this is listed in OMC service manual as high speed prop.

WOW... That alot of prop difference.. Have you looked at the formula on this sight for choosing a prop??

I understand folks wanting speed... You can only ask so much from that little engine.. If you are catching Max RPM.. That's it.. " Hey Capt.. This is all she has" If it isn't fast enough for ya.. Get another boat with a bigger engine...

I use to tool all over a lake in a boat that did 28 MPH( Not GPS).. No speed demon.. Pulled tubes.. Pulled skiers.. Pulled a knee board..
Was just happy to be on the water..

Re: OMC 3.0 130hp SLOW?

I had a 21.5 Capri cuddy with a 130HP Cobra. It went 34mph with 1 person aboard and fumes in the tank - 17P prop. Most of the time I ran a 15P and topped out at 31 or 32mph

Funny thing about the Capri hulls.... they really just start to ride right and handle nice above 30 mph. They seem to be engineered for speed. Which is why I swapped a V6 into my 1851 Capri.

My guess is a 22" will be Waaaay s l o w e r, 'n if run long, will burn holes in the pistons...

+1

It's a 19' Bayliner with a 3.0. Sounds about right.
