I am looking at buying an 86 Larson with the OMC 3.0. The previus owner let me take it out on the lake and run it...
The motor runs as I would expect, but it made a noise I am not familiar with.
It sounded like a buzzing or whinding noise.
There was no knocking at low RPM. Is this normal for this motor? Or should I avoid this one?

Mine doesn't make any strange noises. Can you watch the engine run with the cover off and pinpoint where it's coming from? With the cover on, my boat does make a slight "whirring" sound from under the cover, sounds normal though from other boats I've been on.

I do not have the boat yet, but it is not a whirring noise... When you say whirring, do you mean like a normal car engine sounds?
The sound is almost what I would expect to hear if the oil was low. Not a knock, more like what a Diesel engine sounds like...

Sounds like it might be pinging, due to bad gas or bad timing setting. I would have a mechanic look at it for sure if it's making any noises you don't like. Actually, have a mechanic look at it anyway....

The whirring I refer to, sounds like... um... kinda like a vacuum cleaner I guess. Hard to explain, it's a nice smooth mellow sound though, nothing rattling or clanking.
