Re: OMC 3.0 L Chevy oil change!
This is one of those topics that has been hashed and beaten to death. Searching past posts will net you more than enough info.

I know, I started one of those threads myself. Basically if you ask 10 people for their opinions you get 12 different answers.

1. Find out what the specs are. Probably 30 weight oil. If you don't have the specs buy a manual. You really want to have one anyway if you are doing any work on your boat/engine.

2. Buy a good grade oil. Really cheap on the scheme of things. Marine engines do not typically use multi-viscosity oils.

3. I had asked about synthetics in my posts. Original specs probably did not call for it. Opinions differ. Read the posts and make your own decision. I like synthetics, but you might want to be safe and go with the original specs.

4. If you don't have an oil pump to change the oil get one. I spend about $40 for mine. (Small blue can that you vacumn pump then stick a hose down the dipstick tube to the oil pan and it sucks out the oil).

5. When changing the oil, run the engine for about 5 min to get it warm, then pump out the oil. Change the oil and filter, then run again for 5 min. (This gets the new oil distributed throughout the engine).

6. Changing the filter is the only messy job. I lay down a plastic sheet, then absorbant material under the filter area to catch spills. Loosen the filter, then put a big plastic bag over the filter and unscrew. Hopefully the plastic bag will catch most of the spill. What doesn't get caught can be picked up with the plastic sheet. Don't use a wrench to tighten up the filter.
