First boat I have owned and have been running it for about 6 years now. It's only running off 3 of four cylinders on a 3.0 L OMC enging. Any suggestions on what to do? Should I just look for a replacement engine, and if so, does anyone out there have any suggestions as to where and how to buy? Should I shop for my own engine and have the local guy install, or should I install myself? Should I look into cylinder/ring repair? Also, any suggestions on where to buy new carborator and starters? Thanks!!!

I guess what I meant to say is should I shop for my own engine and have the local guy install, or should I let the local guy quote me a price on engine replacement? Something tells me I should shop for the engine myself?

well it can't hurt to have the guy quote u a price. you're not obligated. also there's no law that says u can't shop for yourself to get the best deal. are u looking at used, new, or reman? what would it cost to have the present engine rebuilt? this is what u have to consider. how come you're engine is only running on 3 cyl? what's the deal with new carb & starter? they ain't cheap. have u looked into having them rebuilt?

Well, not sure, but I think one of the rigngs is bad. I have retimed it, checked pugs, wires, points, etc. So, it's not in the spark, it's in the engine. I am open to any options, rebuild, new, used, whatever, just looking at all my options and any suggestions are appreciated...

I would check for compression in each cylinder before changing an engine.

chuck1,
There are Many ways to Diagnosis just How Tired your motor Is.......
Pay a local guy to see If you need a Rebuild or Not.....
IF you need a rebuild, I'm Sure there's an engine machineshop Somewhere around Sequim, WA .....
See what it'll take to pull your motor,+ have it Rebuilt....
By the tone of your posts, You May want to leave the wrenching to someone Else.....

BTW, Have you done Anything with the Fuel System ??????
How about a compression test, or leak-down test ???

Did a compression test on all cylinders, all checked good, don't know how to do a leak down test.

If "Did a compression test on all cylinders, all checked good"........
You Don't Need a Rebuild......

What Exactly is "all checked good,"??????

A Leak-down Test is, Pressurizing the cylinder(with compressed air,100/120psi), with the piston at TDC,+ Checking for pressure Loss....

Have you checked the Carb Yet ?????

"all checked good" means that the compression in all cylinders seemed normal, i.e. within manuf. specs, i.e. the problem doesn't seem to be cmpression, especially with the cylinder that seems to be the bad one. I don't remember exactly what the compression was on each clylinder, I didn't write it down.

i have to agree with bondo here. If your compression is within 10% of each other across the board then you don't need to go jumping into your block, and i saw you mention every thing but points or does it have electronic ignition a bad set of points will make an enigne run like crap. If it's none of that it's got to be fuel. just remember this K.I.S.S. (keep it simple stupid)i know with car motors especialy old ones the most simple answer is usually the right one, and a motor takes 3 thing to run Air, Fuel, Spark. so just start there and work your way in.
