Hi guys, First post in this forum! I own a 1994 Criss Craft 18' with a 3.0 L OMC Cobra I/O. I just finished replacing the outer hydrolic lines, and upgraded the shift cable to the red color one. Everything appears to be working and shifting fine, but when engaging the propeller out the water for testing there is metallic bell like sound that is made when shifting into forward or reverse. In the water the shifting is OK and smooth, I guess because the insulation and load of the water over the drive unit. Is this noise normal out of the water or do you think the  re may be a problem with the shifting. I followed all the instructions from Stuart's site, great site for OMC owners. Please I would appreciate any input on this.

94 shouldnt have needed a cable upgrade.Unless yours was worn, the "ORIGINAL BAD" cable was in the mid to late 80s {86-89).nothing wrong with preventive maintance though.

The noise is normal due to the dog type clutch in the drives lower unit.

Rod, I thought the bad cable recall came out in 1989. I'm guessing that the chance of an '89 model having the bad cable would depend on when the boat was purchased (i.e., I'd assume that dealers would have replaced the cable on any '89 models they still had in stock when they received the recall notice.) Does that sound right to you?

Thanks Don S, that is what me and a mechanical engineer neighbor of mine figured out since it is a dog clutch and the water is not putting any load on the propeller to act against. The same thing applies when trying to engage the electric switch on the shift bracket to lower the idle speed for shifting outside the water. It just does not work because of the lack of load on the propeller by the water. I did had a problem with the cable that came with the boat and the bellcrank was bended (previous owner probably mounted the outdrive unit on the gimbal housing crooked), so I just replace the cable with the supposed better red cable and is just shifting fine in the water. Thanks for those replies!
