I need help here.I have a 87 bayline capri OMC 3.0 liter motor. When i turn the key to start the engine the starter would crank and not turn the motor. I thinks the solenoid on the starter is broken or something. I have took the starter out to get it check at Autozone and they said its ok. So I put it back again and it has a new battery and its still the same. The starter crank but wont hook up with the flywheel to turn the motor. All I could hear is this loud noise like metal is griding. So could it be a bad solenoid and if so can i replace it wit a car starter? thanks any help is great

Pull the starter back off and look inside at the flywheel ring gear. Are the teath about half gone where the starter is supposed to be hitting?

i didnt try to turn the crank by hand yet. I have look at the flywheel and there is teeth there no problem wit it. Like i say everytime i turn the key to start, the starter would cranks but wont turn the motor or turn the flywheel. It seems as thought the starter teeth is not touching the flywheel teeth. I could heard this very loud griding noise coming from the starter and even on the the bolt on the solenoid would come loose.

Clean and relube the starter bendex. Test it before you put it back on. Make sure it snapps to the front of the starter.

You sure you have the right starter on it?

Sounds like the gear is partially reaching the flywheel. Relube, ensure it jumps out to the front, and get it going good before you re-install again. If you keep trying it without it you'll waste the flywheel teeth. I did that to a bronco when I was a kid because the starter was too rusted to get off. Truck was a sh*tbox beater, but if it was,nt a 5 speed, it would have become a lawn ornament.....good luck. Also be sure you have the right part.

The starter teeth may not be aligning well with the fly wheel teeth. Are all three screws there and tight? You may need spacers to get it to align properly.

My Guess Is,..... You Need a New Starter,....... The Solenoid is a Part of the Starter,... Replace It.......

And,... No, Don't buy an Automotive Starter........They Make Boats Go BOOM............

I had similair problem on my '88 Bayliner with 3 litre OMC. Turned out to be the battery isolator switch dropping too much current over it. Could hear the solenoid 'grinding' but not turning the engine over. Check the voltage at the starter when cranking. If less than 12v, could be due to similair problem.
