OMC 3.0 starter overheating

I have a 1996 G W Rivera Deck boat. It had a new starter installed by the marina when I purchased it and it runs like a top. I recently went to start it after a 20 minute slow cruise and I heard the starter engaging but not turning the boat over. There wasn't a battery click it was a starter hum.

I noticed that positive wire from the battery was super hot and smoking at some of the points. I was told it was probably shorted or damaged..so I replaced the positive wire from the battery to solenoid... the ground wire from the battery to the block ground and the starter solenoid for safe measure.

The boat started right up and ran a few more days. Yesterday I turned it off after a slow cruise in the middle of the river and it would not start....and then I heard the ignition clicking repeatdly in the engine compartment even with the key removed.

This time the ground wire was extremely hot and the starter bolt was glowing red.

Any ideas? It is fairly obvious that I need to replace the starter(again) but I feel like my problem may be alot deeper than that.

Thanks!

Re: OMC 3.0 starter overheating

Change the starter and remove all wires and clean and replace being sure to get them tight. A bad connection will cause loss of amps and force the starter to work harder. I hope that sounds right, it does in my head anyway.
