omc 3.0 wiring problems???

1986 omc 3.0...Motor started missing every time I trimed up or down.Now misses all the time.Any ideas?????

Loose or corroded connections anywhere in the trim or ignition system. Faulty battery (have load tested), alternator not charging.

I checked the alternator by taking the negitive cable loose and it kept running.But I will check the conections..Thank you

If you are talking about the negative battery cable, then you destroyed your alternator.
NEVER remove wires from the battery when the engine is running. That isn't even a test, that is just asking for expensive problems.

If you took the negative wire off the alternator, then it was probably grounded through the mounting.

I did take the neg battery terminal off but turned the motor off to put it back on..

So, you closed the gate after the horse got out.

When you took the cable off with the engine running is when the damage was done to the alternator. There is another post with this same thing going on (removing cable for test).
Where do you guys come up with these off the wall, useless tests that does more harm than good? It sure isn't in any troubleshooting charts or manuals I have ever seen.
