omc 3.0l carb issuse

i've changed the plugs,cap and rotor, (not the points yet or wires) but will be doing the wires cause one broke. the rpms keep rising on its own. adjust the idle screw and the rpms come down but after awhile they go back up? cleaned the carb, and linkage any suggestions what it could be??? thanks

Vacuum leak. or your linkage is not set to properly close the throttle. If pushing on the linkaqge makes it idle there is your problem. Otherwise and only AFTER you replace the bad wires you can spray a little carb spray, seafoam, or other flammable spray in short bursts around the intake and carb (not in the carb) and find out where the air leak is.
