I just blew out the head gasket on my 89' OMC 3.0L.I had to run about three hours after the blow out. Could I have done any other damage? I switched to Amsoil 30w full synthetic marine and diesel oil last year. Could this have contributed to head gasket failure? There is 500 hours on engine. Should I have the head serviced while it is off? I need the voice of experience.

Damage depends on how diluted your oil was after the gasket failure. I'd have the head checked for warpage and machined as necessary. You can inspect it after removal and decide if it needs a valve job or not. I would not think your brand of oil had anything to do with the gasket failure...did you overheat at all?

I also rather Doubt that your choice of Oil had Anything to do with your Problem.....
With a 500hr motor, Deffenetly have the head Rebuilt Before reinstallation.....

Colorado Boat Nut, I read your post.... Even though you've got that head clamped a little Tight, You Should be just Fine....
