I have a 1983 Sea Ray Sundancer with twin OMC 3.8 V6 engines. These have the stringer I/Os. I am trying to get the boat on my trailer and to the shop.

Problem: I can't get it in gear. I can see the cable trying to move the switch set-up on the engine but it won't move into gear. Is there a chance that something is blocking this on the outboard part of the I/O? Is there a moving part on the outboard I/O I can find and clean?

Problem: I can't get the I/Os to raise up. Can I still trailer it with them down? Or is there a way to manually raise them?

thanks for any insight
b.

As you pull the boat out on the trailer, stop & remove the quadrant gear that raises the drive. On the port side of the drive unit.
3-9/16 head bolts. Have a jack to raise it while you put the gear back in. Ever if you dont get it all the way up, you should be able to trailer it to someone that can help.

Sounds like a problem in the shift cable that goes between the shift adapter and the lower unit. You can inspect inside the adapter box for a problem, otherwise you have to pull the drive off and disassemble down to the lower unit to inspect down there. There are a number of possibilities, but the most common is a stretched or broken shift cable.

Thank you for the replys.

It may be the cable but I can see it moving and trying to shift so it is not completely stuck.

I will try to look in the adaptor box. Which I assume is that white box with the gauge on it.

On the gear. Are you saying, loosen it and then lift the outdrive then reattach it again?

b.

Yes, remove the quadrant, raise the drive, put the quadrant back on. Will get you going till you can troubleshoot the lift problem.
