I have a omc 351 ford gets really hot really fast anything over three grand???
I have noticed that previouse owner painted outdrive with spraypaint and covered the some of the screen a little but it only seems to get hot when pushed above three grand. this motor still has a lot of push left and I cant seem to be able to use it
the motor itself is in immaculate condition and runs really well any ideas will help
also risers and elbows are in good shape.

Howdy,

Welcome aboard!

Year and model would really help.

In general, raw water pump and distribution hoses and lines can be a problem. If you have an oil and/or PS cooler, they might be blocked with impeller fragments or other debris.

Also if you have "old" risers and manifolds, they may be clogged with rust, preventing full water flow at higher power settings....you may also have a sticking t-stat or clogged t-stat housing.....

Re: omc 351 running hot

thanks Rick

this is in a 1987 formula thunderebird with the new style risers and logs already installed that was done previous to my purchase of this boat so i know were good there but the impeller has not been replaced yet but why would it only do this over three grand???
no oil coolers or ps coolers installed on this engine and will be doing the t stat tonight
just to be sure we dont have an issue there.

thanks for the response any and all info is helpful

If the impeller is worn, then it will not be able to pump enough water at the higher RPM's. If the manifolds are new, the impeller is the first place I would look at.

Not by a long shot! :D As a wise man once said:
