Does anyone know if a plain old flywheel for a GM 4.3 ltr from napa or auto zone will work on a OMC 4.3 ltr. I wasn't sure if there was a difference. I can get a new flywheel for a GM 4.3 for about $80.00 from a auto part store but as soon as you try and buy it with a OMC part number from a marina or online you can double or even triple the price.
Also, this might be a dumb question, but someone told me I can pull my engine without pulling my outdrive. Didn't think it was possible but they said the way the u joints are on a OMC allows you to pull the engine forward until the shaft is out of the coupler. Is this true.

Another option is to have a machine shop replace the ring gear on the flywheel you have now. What year? I had a 90 4.3 OMC and the flywheel had the same casting number on it as one from a 4.3 Chevy truck.

Technically you can do what they say and slide the engine forward enough to remove it while the drive is in place. That would be a complete waste of time because you have to align the engine with the drive OFF to re install everything. It's only 6 bolts that hold the drive on....take it off...then pull the motor.

Yes. the ring gear is shot. My motor was hydrolocked and broke off teeth when I tried to start it.

I removed my out drive last year to replace the bellows. Can I re-use the bellows that were new last year or do I have to get new ones/

You can reuse them. Not advisable though. As for the ring gear it should be replaceable. It is a very simple process to do it. Just have to use an oven large enough to heat the ring gear.

shop.evinrude.com has all the parts book online for your 87 4.3 - go to parts, then dropdown menu to sterndrive, then select year and model
OMC used the GM part numbers for engine parts, so you can get all the GM auto/truck part numbers right out of the omc parts book.

Ayuh,.... The Ring Gear, is a separate piece from the flywheel, 'n is easily changed,...

You can get a replacement from Napa, 'n they're pretty cheap,... All ya need is the diameter, 'n tooth count...
'ell,... pull yer flywheel, 'n knock the ring gear off, with a hammer, 'n punch, 'n bring it with ya...
To reinstall the new 1, put the flywheel in the fridge, 'n the ring gear in the oven on High,...
In 20 minutes/ 1/2 hour, pull the ring gear from the oven, 'n drop it on the flywheel,....
She'll be ready for reinstallation, by the time ya clean up the ole lady's kitchen...

The bellows won't be touched in the operation, but you'll need new gaskets, 'n o-rings...
