I recently purchased a boat with this outdrive. When I picked it up it was covered in seaweed etc. I powerwashed it and scrubbed it down and it looks awesome. The previous owner had done all the maintenance and told me he replaced the oil with synthetic and it is good for a while.

A day after I had cleaned the outdrive gear oil started to leak out of the top/dipstick screw.

After reading all over the internet I am wondering if water has got into it while I cleaned it? I took the screw out of the top with very little effort and the o-ring gasket is fine but I do believe it was loose.

I wiped everything down cleaned the dipstick and it reads slightly above the fill line.

After a couple of days now and fastening the dipstick screw tightly it is not leaking.

Any thoughts out there?

Much appreciated

Probably nothing to worry about. Keep your eye on the level when you use it. Also, just because the oil is synthetic you still need to change it. How long has it been in there? Personally, I like natural oil better.

You could drain it to see if there is any water or take it out and run it for a 1/2 hour or so then check the oil , if it looks like it has white streaks mixed with the oil you'll want to change it. When ever I buy a used vehicle, whether a car, motorcycle, lawn mower, or, especialy a boat I always change the fluids, that way "I" know exactly whats in it. GW

Yea always change the fluids when yu buy something with an engine. Never take the previous owners word on it. Even if they did change it at least you will be sure on what's in it.
