Yup 800 is much larger than your 400, you will need to find a 400. 'nutcase

Re: OMC 400 and 800 Lower units

Another question, Found a good unit on internet last night(400) but it appears to be a little different, mine has an anode built in the upper part of the lower unit. The one I found has no anode, why and is their a difference between them.
Thanks Again

good eye. You do not want that one.

The rectangular anode is only found on 1982-1985 mechanical shift which uses a specific shift cable, shift converter box and ESA system on the engine ignition system..

1978-1981 were hydro-mechanical shift. The worst of the worst really, the hydro mechanism was prone to rust and failure if water ever got into the lower unit...and as you found out, that's not a rare occurrence in a lower unit.
Also the cable is different.

If you put your location in your profile, someone might recommend a local place to look for one.

That would be great if someone could tell mewhere I might find a good used one, Don't really want to put rebuilt one on it, Hard to justify, spending that much on an older boat. Thanks

I don't have a problem paying to have it shipped, used boat parts are few and far between in Montana.

yeah, until you hear the cost of shipping east to west. It's silly what they charge. North south shipping is cheap, but "horizontally" kills.
