OMC 400 no F or Reverse- how to remove lower unit

i have a buddies OMC 400 in an older Renken. It’s got the DNR HIN tags so I’m not exactly sure how old.

It wont go into forward or reverse. I dropped the lower unit but I am not sure how to get the shift mechanism off the lower unit. If you shift it now I can tell it is pulling the cable both directions all the way down to the lower unit and this leads me to believe it may have a broken fork. I can’t find much in the way of removing this to be able to disassemble the lower unit.
I did make the tool to pull the shaft out for the gear, I had hoped it would be that simple but I’m still missing some steps.

Any help is appreciated.

On the engine is a tag "somewhere." Typically it's on the starboard side, around the rear motor mount. You're looking for the engine ID to tell you what model Stringer you have. There were three different types of shift systems used in the OMC Stringers, and we need to know which you have before someone can help you out.

OMC 400 drives were the 4 cylinder models with hydro-mechanical or full-mechanical shifts. Since you say you have a cable, I'm assuming it's one of those. Earlier versions were electric shifts. Be careful with that shift cable ... they're hard to find and expensive when you do.

I will look for the numbers on the motor when I get home in a few hours. It is a 4 cylinder and it has a physical cable going down to it and then u see that housing is a gear and a gear rack(straight gear) had mostly read about the electric shift so first I assumed it was that. Thanks for the reply

The problem may be in the upper gear housing where the water pump shaft splines engage the lower end of the pinion shaft. Most times that is where the problem is. You need to check this out before pulling the lower apart. Try to grab the lower end of the water pump shaft and see if you can rotate it

I think you've got a '78 120 HP. That makes it a hydro-mechanical shift. I'm not at all familiar with that shift system.

Like Kenny said, check that drive shaft first.

Are you considering the water pump shaft to be the one that splines onto the lower unit? So basically the stripped(commonly) one is right in the middle of the upper unit?

That is correct. Those splines are the “weak link” in the stringer drives. The parts are available but there are some special tools needed to install the pinion shaft to properly locate the lower seals.
